The €672 allowance per household member is shared with other eligible premiums and certain personal-loan interest.

Method and limitations

The engine applies the legal ceiling, calculates the additional reduction in taxable income, then reuses the progressive 2026 scale and employment-fund surcharge. It does not simulate an ACD decision, foreign taxation or future product taxation.

Decision

Four checks before deciding

Request a quantified written answer where a product exists. Marketing material does not replace full terms, complete fees or a suitable proposal.

01

Protection need

Separate death or disability cover from savings and ensure each guarantee addresses a real need.

02

Fees and surrender value

Request premium charges, annual fees, yearly surrender values and the cost of guarantees.

03

Guarantees or market-linked funds

Check what is guaranteed, what depends on markets and how much is invested after fees.

04

Shared tax allowance

Subtract premiums and interest already claimed before assigning a tax value to a new contract.

Analysis

Who is it for, why use it and what goes wrong?

Potentially suitable if…

  • A household with a genuine need for death, disability or long-term savings cover.
  • A taxpayer with some of the shared allowance still available.

Less suitable if…

  • Someone seeking a liquid short-term investment.
  • A household whose other insurance and interest already use the allowance.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a savings policy when pure death cover is the real need.
  • Counting an allowance already used by other premiums twice.
  • Failing to request the surrender-value table.

Advantages

  • + Several protection needs may qualify.
  • + Allowance multiplied by household members.
  • + Choice between guarantees and market-linked investments, depending on the contract.

Drawbacks

  • − Fees and guarantees vary widely.
  • − Only €672 per household member and shared with other expenses.
  • − Early surrender may be costly or tax-inefficient.

Worked example

Example: a three-person tax household

The shared limit is 3 × €672, or €2,016. If €900 of eligible premiums and personal interest has already used it, at most €1,116 of legal capacity remains for a new payment.

2026 rules

What the calculator includes

  • Annual allowance of €672 per member of the tax household, increased for a spouse and each eligible child.
  • The limit is shared with other eligible premiums and certain personal-loan interest.
  • Contracts with a survival benefit must in particular have an effective term of at least 10 years.
  • Theft, fire, glass-breakage and comprehensive motor cover are not deductible under this provision.
  • The standard €480 special-expense allowance may reduce the incremental tax effect.
